Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other marked automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
